  1. I purchased your modem 2 weeks ago at Future Shop in Edmonton.  I use
  2. it primarily with Winsock/Netscape 1.1 for a PPP Internet connection
  3. to my business office's T1 Internet Connection.  It works 
  4. wonderfully for this and I am very happy.  
  5.  
  6. Now the bad news.  I called my favorite local BBS (Programmer's Guild)
  7. this morning, which uses Ripterm V1.54.  While using Zmodem to 
  8. download 2 files, I received the following errors:

  10. 1.) Sending a new file off-set!!!
  11. 2.) GETPAD: Incoming Garbage
  12.  
  13. The remote host cancelled the download after 200 errors.  I contacted
  14. the sysop (Bob Akaye), to confirm that BBS was not the cause of the 
  15. problem.  He confirmed this and asked me to verify that I am using 
  16. the following Ripterm/modem settings:

  18. Ripterm settings:
  19. Port Lock ON
  20. Baud Rate 38800
  21. RTS/CTS ON
  22.  
  23. Modem Init string:
  24. AT &C1 &D2 E1 V1 X$ ^M

  26. I confirmed this, then told him I would try the following to
  27. isolate the problem:

  29. 1.) Use Xmodem and Ymodem protocol to download
  30. 2.) Re-install Ripterm V1.54 if necessary
  31. 3.) Install newer version of Ripterm if necessary.

  33. I tried downloading using Xmodem AND Ymodem protocols and they
  34. worked without error!  At this point I knew it has something to do 
  35. with the way the modem works with the Zmodem protocol. I used to own 
  36. a Creatix 14.4 internal modem which died on me after two years of use,
  37. but it always worked with this BBS, even 2 weeks ago, just before it 
  38. died.

  40. The next thing I tried was Procomm Plus and Zmodem downloads from 
  41. freenet.edmonton.ab.ca.  I received 67 "BAD CRC" error messages down-
  42. loading a 1 meg file.  Okay, I thought that would happen.  Then I
  43. tried a different protocol.  The only others they support are 2 
  44. flavors of Kermit.  I downloaded the same file that Zmodem failed 
  45. with, but this time I used Kermit (standard) and Long Block 
  46. Super Kermit.  The downloads were flawless.  Okay, so I know its 
  47. still the way the modem is working with the Zmodem protocol.  As 
  48. another point of reference, I used my Creatix modem 2 weeks ago for 
  49. flawless Zmodem downloads, so I know the problem isn't with Freenet.

  51. If you're still reading, (pheew!), you now realize why I am 
  52. contacting you.  I have a LOT of experience with communications 
  53. software and hardware.  I have isolated the problem as described 
  54. above.  I am guessing that you may have probably received this support 
  55. request from others; I trust that you have a fix for this.

  57. Extra information that you may find useful:  
  58. My PC is an IPC with an Intel 386DX 25 Mhz,
  59. AMI BIOS, Maxtor 240 Meg hard drive, Panasonic 2X CD-ROM drive, Sound 
  60. Blaster Pro, and 4 meg of RAM, with DOS 6.2 and Windows 3.1.  It is 
  61. a very stable (as stable as 3.1 gets) platform which has given me 
  62. thousands of hours of reliable service over the past 4 years.  To 
  63. date, this is the most serious compatability problem I have 
  64. experienced.
